The first question many students ask is why they should study in
the US when Mexico, including the Guadalajara area, has many wonderful and top
institutions, many of which attract international students. The advantages in
seeking an education in the US are extensive from many different areas, and ones
you would not experience studying within Mexico.
The international experience is extremely unique. While studying abroad you learn another culture which will open your eyes to how other countries function on a daily basis; both similar and different from what you have experienced in Mexico. The US offers a large selection of different universities, from small private liberal arts colleges to large public research institutions and everything in-between. From beaches to mountains to flat farmland, and warm tropical climate to snow, you are able to experience something that is either similar to what you have become accustomed to, or something extremely different.
American universities offer unlimited study options. Any degree program you could think of is offered at an institution in the US, and most institutions allow you to switch programs as your interests change (I changed my undergrad degree two times without a problem). The US offers some of the top Universities which are world-renown institutions and global leaders in education and research and you can study below world-renown faculty. You can also begin your studies at a community college for two years, and then continue on to a four-year institution, something that is becoming more popular in the US. Most schools in the US offer very diverse student and faculty populations, making your experience extend beyond the classroom, something I believe is one of the most important parts of the college experience.
American universities provide a unique student life atmosphere. Residence hall living allows students to learn how to be independent, but at the same time offer all the necessary resources. Most campuses offer clubs and organizations from sports to political to arts to other interests. Depending on the college, many have their own sports teams and performing arts centers on campus and offer many activities during the week. Because of the number of international students, campuses offer many services to these students and may have cultural houses or groups which offer a home away from home.
American universities open the doors for future employment. Employers in the US, Mexico, and other countries are interested in students with international experience and fluency in English. Understanding other cultures is very important for employers who deal with international business and can make you valuable to an organization. While in the US, you are able to build direct relationships and contacts with large US corporations for internships and employment, taking advantage of the many campus services, including the career centers.
American universities are also close to home. While you are able to experience another culture, many universities offer a home away from home experience and have many activities and clubs to offer the support you need. Travel to and from Guadalajara is very easy (I am saying this from my own experience, I have made the trip several times and it is not very expensive)! Your family can visit or you can go home on school breaks; you are just a short flight away from home!
Overall, attending college in the US is a great decision and will lead to a wonderful experience, putting you ahead of your peers. When presented with the right information the process is not too difficult and highly beneficial.

We will provide information on the application process, financial aid, the visa process, college selection, major study selection, family concerns, and student life. Information will be provided by US students, Mexican students studying in the US, the US Consulate in Guadalajara, US university international offices, and other helpful resources. Questions will be monitored and answered by the consulate staff and other knowledgeable commentators.
The next blog will contain information about financial aid. Paying for college is a big concern among many domestic and international students, but there are many resources to help alleviate the costs of attending school in the US. We will provide information on this process and resources directly from a financial aid office at a US institution.
