Ayuda Financiera / Financial Aid

El cómo pagar  la universidad es una gran preocupación entre muchos estudiantes nacionales  e internacionales, pero existen varios recursos para ayudarte  con los costos de asistir a una escuela en  EEUU y varias de estas  escuelas te ayudan a encontrar recursos específicos para tu situación.  Muchas instituciones también te ayudarán a buscar soluciones financieras así que consulta sus  sitios de internet y contacta  ,  directamente su oficina de ayuda financiera para que puedan proporcionarte la información que necesitas..  La mayoría de las universidades tienen un centro de estudiantes internacionales, el cual es valioso cuando se trata de buscar ayuda financiera

Los estudiantes internacionales no son elegibles para obtener ayuda financiera por  parte del Gobierno de EEUU a  menos que sean  ciudadanos  estadounidenses, pero esas  no son las únicas opciones. Algunas universidades ofrecen becas, por lo que una vez que ya hayas decidido a dónde te gustaría asistir, es importante que investigues o te pongas en contacto con la universidad.      Mi universidad, la Universidad de Illinois, tiene una página con todas las becas disponibles (https://secure.admin.illinois.edu/osfa/scholarship-database/index.aspx) y puedes buscarlas para ver cual es adecuada para tu situación.  Estas becas se basan tanto en el  mérito, como en que son exclusivas  de programas o departamentos  específicos de la universidad. Un gran recurso GRATUITO  para encontrar becas es FastWeb (http://www.fastweb.com/).  ¡Proporcionan información sobre más de 1.3 millones de becas, con un total de  más de $3 mil millones!  Tendrás  que buscar las becas para asegurarte que son  para estudiantes internacionales, pero debido a que muchas compañías están interesadas en estudiantes que cuentan con experiencia internacional y fluidez  en dos idiomas, , hay muchas oportunidades.

¿Eres un estudiante de posgrado?  La mayoría de las escuelas ofertan puestos de asistente o de posgrado que ofrecen una exención de pago. .  Estos puestos están abiertos a estudiantes internacionales y lo que es aún mejor es que te ofrecen experiencia laboral mientras estudias.  Puedes  ser asistente de enseñanza , trabajar para un profesor de investigación, ser un consejero de residencia, o trabajar en algún departamento; hay muchas opciones.  Deberás  verificar con la institución así como el programa de posgrado porque algunos programas profesionales (Maestría, , la Escuela Médico/Dental, y otros) tal vez no  ofrezcan esta opción.

¡Considera trabajar para una gran compañía  que financie tu  educación en EEUU!  Muchas compañías pagarán grados universitarios  si trabajas para ellas  por algunos años, ya que  necesitan  empleados con experiencia internacional.  Mientras esto se da principalmente para posgrados  , es posible que haya algunas compañías que pagarán si continuas trabajando para ellas en el extranjero y después de haber terminado tus estudios. .  Compañías como Whirlpool, Intel, HP, IBM, y Google son algunas de las muchas  compañías que se encuentran  en México y EEUU y tienen programas que pagarán completamente o parte de los estudios .  (Mi hermana trabaja para uno de estas compañías y ha viajado a México por el trabajo y ahora la compañía le está pagando su maestría)..  También muchas universidades  tienen programas de intercambio  con compañías.  Me ofrecí  como voluntaria  en nuestro Instituto de Inglés Intensivo  a donde las compañías enviarán a sus empleados de dos a seis meses para que aprendan  inglés y conozcan la cultura de EEUU y así puedan trabajar  internacionalmente.  Estos son excelentes  programas y muchas compañías pagarán  para que puedas hacer  este intercambio.

Aun cuando muchos estudiantes eligen estudiar 4 (o más) años en la misma institución, esta no es la única opción.  Puedes considerar lo que llamamos el 2+2 o dos años en un colegio donde puedes hacer estudios técnicos  y dos años en una universidad.  Esto se está convirtiendo en algo  muy popular para los estudiantes porque pueden  completar   varios  requisitos generales,  en lo que se deciden por una carrera o especialidad, y así pagar menos al asistir a la universidad .  La mayoría de las universidades grandes tienen transferencia directa de colegios con carreras técnicas  así que podrás hacer el cambio sin ningún  problema.  Hablaré un poco más acerca de esta opción en un futuro blog, pero quise presentarles  esta opción  porque puede ser una buena decisión financiera  si esto es algo que les preocupa.

Toma en cuenta   que las  visas de educación de no-inmigrante tienen restricciones  y el empleo para estudiantes internacionales está  regulado.  Por favor cerciórate de   leer nuestra sección de visas  en un blog próximo para que tengas más información sobre la visa que necesitas , y con respecto al empleo, asegúrate  de  verificarlo  con tu universidad.

How to pay for college is a big concern among many domestic and international students, but there are many resources to help with the costs of attending school in the US and many of the schools help you find resources specific to your situation.  Many institutions will also help you search for financial solutions because they want you to attend, so look around their website and contact their financial aid office directly and they should be able to provide valuable information.  Most colleges have a student service center for international students and they are valuable when searching for financial resources.

International students are not eligible for financial aid through the US Government or the state unless they are a US Citizen, but, those are not the only options.  There are scholarships offered from the individual colleges, so it is important to speak with the college or do research once you have decided where you would like to attend.  My college, the University of Illinois, provides a page with all the available scholarships (https://secure.admin.illinois.edu/osfa/scholarship-database/index.aspx) and you can search them to see what may apply to your situation.  These scholarships are both merit-based as well as unique to the specific college program or department.

A great FREE resource for scholarships is FastWeb (http://www.fastweb.com/).  They provide information on over 1.3 million scholarships totaling over $3 billion!!!  You will have to search the scholarships to ensure they are open for international students, but since many companies are interested in students with international experience and dual-fluency in languages, there are many opportunities.

Are you a graduate student?  Most schools offer assistantships or graduate positions that offer a tuition waiver, and these are open to international students.  What is even greater about these positions is they offer you job experience while you are studying.  You can be a teaching assistant, work for a research professor, be a residence hall advisor, or work in a department; there are so many options.  You will need to check with the institution as well as the degree program because some professional programs (MBA, Medical/Dental School, and others) may not offer this option.

Consider working for a large company and having them sponsor your education in the US!  Many companies will pay for college degrees if you work for their company a certain number of years because they need employees with international experience.  While this mostly applies to graduate and advanced degrees, there may be some companies who will pay if you continue to work for them abroad and beyond degree completion.  Companies such as Whirlpool, Intel, HP, IBM, and Google are some of the many companies located in Mexico and the US and have programs where they will pay full or part of degrees.  (I know this personally because my sister works for one of these companies and has traveled to Mexico for work and is now receiving her MBA paid by the company).  Many colleges also have exchange programs with companies.  I have volunteered at our Intensive English Institute where companies will send their employees for two-six months to learn English and American culture to be able to work internationally.  These are great programs and many companies will pay for you to do this exchange.

While many students choose to study all 4+ years at the same institution, this is not the only option.  You may want to consider what we call the 2+2, or two years at a community college and two years at a university.  This is becoming very popular for all students because you are able to finish many general requirements while deciding on a specific major and paying less to attend college.  Most large universities have direct transfer from community colleges so you will be able to make the change without a problem.  I will talk a little more about this option in a future blog, but I wanted to present this option to you because it may be a good financial decision if this is a concern.

Be advised that non-immigrant education visas have limitations and employment for international students is regulated.  Please be sure to read our visa section in an upcoming blog for more information on the visa required and be sure to check with your college regarding employment.
