Admisiones – Parte 3: Estudiantes Admitidos
Así que fuiste aceptado en la escuela de tu elección y estás listo para seguir adelante y asistir a esa institución… bueno, existen algunos pasos que la mayoría de las instituciones requerirán en este momento del proceso.

Financiero:

En este punto, la mayoría de las escuelas requerirán la información financiera que mencioné en la “Parte 2”.

Salud:

La mayoría de los estudiantes admitidos necesitarán entregar una historia clínica  y la cartilla de vacunación. Algunas universidades requieren que compres su seguro médico si tu póliza actual no te cubre en los EE. UU.

Certificados oficiales de estudios:
Después de que un nuevo estudiante es admitido, debe presentar sus certificados académicos oficiales de las instituciones previas. Los alumnos que son transferidos deben de entregar estos documentos al momento de hacer su solicitud. Se necesita una traducción certificada en inglés de estos documentos, (por un funcionario escolar, un traductor oficial o una oficina consular o embajada estadounidense).

Selección de vivienda/comedor:

Una vez que hayas seleccionado tu institución, se te preguntará acerca de tu plan de selección de vivienda y comedor. Algunas instituciones requieren que los estudiantes de primer ingreso vivan en el campus (y cuenten con un plan de alimentos), mientras que otras te permitirán vivir en un departamento o elegir tu propia vivienda. Algunas instituciones cuentan con residencias, específicamente para estudiantes internacionales y proporcionan recursos extra específicamente para ellos. Vivir en una residencia/dormitorio tu primer año generalmente te ayuda a adaptarte ya que no tendrás que preocuparte de los recibos de servicios, de la comida o de conocer gente.

Orientación:

La mayoría de las escuelas cuentan con orientación para nuevos estudiantes. Algunas la proporcionan durante el verano, mientras que otras piden a los estudiantes que lleguen una o dos semanas antes para que se adapten al campus. Se te mostrarán los recursos disponibles (biblioteca, centro o asociación de estudiantes, organizaciones de estudiantes, oportunidades de voluntariado, etc.) así como el campus.

Admissions – Part 3: Admitted Students

So you have been accepted to the school of your choice and you are ready to move forward and attend that institution...well there are some steps that most institutions will require at this point.

Financial:

At this point, most schools will require the financial information that I stated in “Part 2.” 

Health:

Most admitted students will be required to submit a medical and immunization history. Some universities require that you purchase their health insurance if your current policy does not cover you in the US.

Official Transcripts:

After a new student is admitted they must present their official academic transcripts from previous institutions.  Transfer students must submit these at the time of application.  A certified English translation of this transcript is required (by school official, official translator, or US embassy/consulate office).

Housing/Dining Selections:

Once you have selected your institution, you will be asked for your housing and dining plan selections.  Some institutions require freshmen to live in campus housing (and have a dining plan), while others will allow you to live in an apartment or select your own housing.  Some institutions have residence halls specifically for international students and provide extra resources specifically for them.  Living in a residence hall/dormitory your first year usually helps with the adjustment since you will not have to worry about utility bills, food, or meeting people.

Orientation:

Most schools have orientation for new students.  Some provide this over the summer; while others have students come one or two weeks early to adjust to campus.  They will show you the resources available (library, union or student center, student organizations, volunteer opportunities, etc…) as well as show you around campus.

Además de los requisitos generales que ya hemos mencionado, frecuentemente, los estudiantes internacionales deben proporcionar información adicional cuando solicitan ingresar a instituciones en los EE.UU.

Credenciales  Académicas (Específico para Estudiantes Internacionales):

Los estudiantes internacionales deben de completar un programa de estudios que sería aceptado en instituciones selectivas en México. Tu preparatoria debe ser una que una Universidad mexicana selectiva aceptaría.

Financiero (Específico para Estudiantes Internacionales):

En la mayoría de las escuelas se te pedirá que verifiques si cuentas con los fondos para cubrir el costo del primer año de asistencia. Esto generalmente es necesario hasta que el estudiante es admitido en la institución sin embargo, debes estar preparado para comprobar que cuentas con los fondos suficientes (incluyendo ayuda financiera) para pagar la colegiatura y cuotas del primer año. Los costos son diferentes para cada escuela en los EE.UU. y por lo general se pueden consultar en su sitio de internet. Para darles una idea del costo, el primer año de colegiatura y cuotas de la Universidad de Illinois es de   $ 54,300 dls. y de la Universidad de California es de $ 52, 330 dls. (esto incluye los costos de vivienda, libros, viaje y otras cuotas necesarias para asistir a la escuela por un año).

Idioma Inglés (Específico para estudiantes internacionales cuya lengua materna no es el inglés):

Los estudiantes cuya lengua materna no es el inglés necesitan presentar el TOEFL o el IELTS para probar que tienen un nivel competente en inglés al momento de la admisión. El puntaje mínimo varía según la institución y existen excepciones para las admisiones de categoría limitada (si se toman clases adicionales en la institución una vez inscrito). Los puntajes deben de tener menos de dos años de antigüedad y debe enviarlos directamente la institución que aplique el examen. Si quisieras mejorar tu inglés antes de asistir a la escuela, en los EE.UU. existen muchas instituciones que ofrecen cursos intensivos de inglés.

Admissions – Part 2: Specific for International Students

In addition to the general requirements we have posted, international students often must provide additional items when applying to institutions in the US.

Academic Credentials (Specific for International Students):

International students must be completing a program of study which would be accepted in selective institutions in Mexico.  Your high school must be one which would be accepted at a selective Mexican University.

Financial (Specific for International Students):

At most schools, you will be required to verify that you have the funds to cover the cost of the first year of attendance.  This is usually not needed until the student is admitted into the institution, but you should be prepared to show you have enough funds (including financial aid) to pay the tuition and fees for the entire first year.  These costs are different for every school in the US and can typically be found on the individual website.  To give you an idea of the cost, the University of Illinois first year tuition and fees is $54,300 USD and the University of California is $52,330 (these include the costs of living, books, travel, and other fees that would be required to attend school for one year).

English Language (Specific for International/Non-Native English students):

Students whose native language is not English need to submit a TOEFL or IELTS to show they are proficient in English at the time of admission.  The minimum score varies by institutions and there are exceptions for limited status admissions (if additional classes will be taken at the institution once enrolled).  The scores must be less than two years old and submitted directly from the testing service.  There are many institutions in the US that offer intensive English classes if you would like to improve your English prior to attending school.
